What is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is an aggressive, intentional act carried out by a group or individual, using electronic forms of contact, repeatedly and over time against a victim who cannot easily defend him or herself. While there are some similarities with traditional bullying, cyberbullying is different in that it can be anonymous and can be done from a distant location 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It also has the potential to quickly reach a much larger audience than face-to-face bullying.
Targets of cyberbullying have a greater chance of bullying others because being cyberbullied can lead to revenge bullying as a way to cope. Those who cyberbully others are also at a greater risk of being bullied, resulting in an ongoing cycle. Researchers found that engaging in cyberbullying contributed to a twenty-fold increase of also being a target of cyberbullying.
