What can kids do to prevent and address bullying?
Bullying is an issue that requires adult intervention, but adults cannot act in a vacuum. When student engage in bullying prevention, changes are more likely to occur and be sustained. In addition to monitoring their own behavior and treating others with respect, students should learn and practice strategies for preventing and safely intervening when bullying does occur.
Students need to be able to recognize bullying behaviors and if safe, stand up to the student who is bullying. Students should act confidently rather than confrontational. If the situation is not safe or assertively addressing the bullying did not work, it is time to tell an adult.
Other strategies for dealing with bullying are:
- Use humor to deflect bullying
- Avoid unsafe locations, sites, networks or platforms
- Leave a place or site before a potential bullying situation develops
- Walk with a group of friendly peers
- Never accept friend requests from people you do not know
- Assume that everything you put online will be there forever and that everyone will have access to it
Students can safeguard themselves against bullying by developing friendship with peers and positive relationships with teachers. Research indicates that having a peer network protects against being bullied and also reduces the negative effects of being bullied. Research also shows that having healthy adult relationships reduces the likelihood of being bullied.
Students should also assess their own behavior to determine if it is playful teasing or bullying. Simply saying “I was kidding” does not make a behavior okay. If asked to stop and they did not, it is bullying. If they engage in a playful behavior but the other person cannot do the same, it is bullying. If they are having fun but the other person is not, it is bullying.
