Preventing Bullying in Schools
One of the best ways to decrease problems associated with bullying is to implement evidence-based prevention strategies that will develop a positive climate to reduce the likelihood of all types of bullying. Research and best practice in bullying prevention indicate that a multifaceted, comprehensive approach works best.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Preventing Bullying through Science, Policy, and Practice report states that school-based programs with multiple components that both involve all students and offer targeted interventions for those at high risk for bullying are more likely to be effective.
Strategies to address bullying should be supported by research and based on best practices. Bullying prevention efforts are most successful when everyone at the school is involved and efforts take place at the schoolwide, classroom, individual, and community level. Rather than a single event for students to attend, a bullying prevention initiative should serve as a framework for:
- Restructuring the school environment to reduce opportunities and rewards for bullying
- Encouraging pro-social behaviors
- Building a sense of community.
It should be a long-term commitment that becomes a daily part of school life.
