Bullying Prevalence Rates
According to the 2016 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Preventing Bullying through Science, Policy, and Practice report, school-based bullying likely affects between 18 and 31 percent of children and youth and the prevalence of cyberbullying ranges from 7 to 15 percent of youth.
While trend results from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) show no real change in prevalence rates from 2009-2019, the 2021 YRBS data showed a slight reduction with 15% of students in grades 9-12 reporting being bullied at school in the previous 12 months.
While any child can experience bullying, some are at higher risk because of ways they are perceived as being different. Prevalence rates can be higher for vulnerable subgroups of youth such as children with disabilities, special needs, and health problems. Other vulnerable populations include sexual minority youth; minority immigrants, and those with minority religious affiliations.
